Common Causes of Neck Pain, Risk Factors, and Treatments

Updated: Nov 4, 2020

The human head weighs approximately 10lbs. while the bone directly underneath the skull weighs only 2oz! When we are hunched over looking at our phones for most of the day, imagine the pressure and the weight you are carrying on your shoulders. The most common cause of neck pain is a muscle strain, in which a muscle is stretched too far and tears. If your neck pain isn’t alleviated with heat, ice, or over-the-counter pain medications, Dr. Mark Freund or Dr. Nicole Gopaul of Natural Care Chiropractic can treat the problem.

A common risk factor for developing neck pain is poor posture, such as slouching while watching television or looking down at a phone screen for long periods of time. Neck pain and stiffness may also result from the poor support of the neck during sleep, lifting too heavy during labor-intensive work, or performing constant motions that put repetitive stress on the neck muscles and joints. At Natural Care Chiropractic, we believe in drug-free treatment methods. The treatment for neck pain will depend on where the pain is located and what it’s stemming from.
