Backpack Safety: Tips from a Chiropractor

If you’re still looking for a gift for someone this Christmas season, a new backpack might be a good idea. One of the most common mistakes is to overstuff backpacks or wear them incorrectly.
A backpack can distribute weight evenly across the body, making it a better option than a shoulder bag or a purse. But that requires a person to wear both shoulder straps and a strap across the chest. When shopping, look for backpacks with wide, padded shoulder straps. During use, the straps should be snug enough to allow the backpack to rest on the center of the upper back, but they shouldn’t restrict blood flow into the arms or pinch the shoulders.
Many backpacks come with features such as pull-out handles or wheels. It is best to avoid these unless they are going to be used regularly, because they’re dead weight. A full backpack will ideally not weigh more than 15% of the wearer’s body weight. If a child doesn’t frequently empty theirs of unneeded items, their parents might consider getting them a smaller backpack. When considering a new backpack for a child, also ask them whether they’ve experienced pain, numbness, or tingling in their back, shoulders, or arms.
